Enhancing Thin Masonry Veneer: Metal Support Systems
This session will examine the design and performance of metal backing systems that mechanically support thin masonry veneers. Join us to compare various systems and traditionally laid face brick masonry as well as review critical design and installation factors.
You'll also learn about performance tests that establish code compliance for proprietary thin veneer support systems and explore strategies for water penetration, structural performance, thermal efficiency, and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 285 approval.
Learning Objectives
- Discover water management strategies for mechanically supported thin masonry veneer systems.
- Analyze veneer support methods for mechanically supported thin veneer systems.
- Explore requirements for supporting thin masonry veneer over continuous insulation.
- Learn how thin masonry veneer systems comply with building codes

Adding Interest with Brick Shapes
One important reason for brick's popularity is its ability to adapt to design criteria. It can be shaped and used in a wide variety of traditional and contemporary detailing: Such as arches to sills, copings, columns and treads. This program focuses on the use of shapes, not only to increase the aesthetic quality of brickwork, but also toward accomplishing better detailing and better performing brickwork. Many applications involve units that are not normally considered to be brick shapes. Increased water penetration resistance, reducing the size of expansion joints, and the proper design of acute angle corners, can all be realized through the use of shapes.
Discussion will focus on increased performance of brickwork through the use of specially designed brick, i.e. arch design and versatility, sloped sills and caps, shelf angle brick, and even brick sculpture. Included will be discussion on how to reduce the cost of shapes through individual brick design and considerations of color, size, and bond patterns.
Other topics included in this presentation are --
Manufacturing
Glen-Gery makes every effort to see that special shapes match the color of the field brick used.
Radial Brick
What is the smallest radius possible without using a special shape?
Corners
Should obtuse angle corners be designed with 8 inch and 4 inch legs or a 6-inch and 2 inch leg?
Standard Brick
Special shapes are unnecessary in many job-specific applications including arches, sills, and caps.
Historical Reference
We often forget that many historical details, that included special shapes, were used for more than just aesthetic reasons.
Sculpture
Brick masonry and its use as sculpture are on the rise. Examples of brick sculpture will be presented and discussed.

Fired Up! Second Kiln Ignited at Glen-Gery’s Mid-Atlantic Plant to Keep up with Demand for Wood Molded Brick

WYOMISSING, Pa. – July 14, 2020 – Demand for Glen-Gery’s wood molded brick, including the well-known Cushwa brand, continues to grow as architects and designers utilize more brick for unique design opportunities. To keep up with this demand, Glen-Gery has fired up its second kiln at the Shoemakersville, Pennsylvania facility.
The second kiln will produce an additional 40 million molded brick per year and has created 30 new jobs at this facility. “We’re pleased to be able to create employment opportunities for the hard-working people of Berks County while filling demand for our products,” said Mark Ellenor, President Brickworks North America.
Innovative design techniques by architects and improved product development by Glen-Gery has led to this increased demand. “Brick is back”, said Ellenor, “Modern design is trending toward brick because of innovative product development and the availability of unique colors and textures that last forever.”
Glen-Gery is the largest manufacturer of wood molded facebrick and shapes in the United States. Learn more about Glen-Gery's Molded Brick Collection.
