Face Brick Dimensions, Pieces per Sq Ft and Suggested Mortar Quantities
The most common brick in the United States is the modular brick, which measures 3-5/8 inches thick, 2-1/4 inches high, and 7-5/8 inches long. That is the actual size of the brick itself. Add a standard 3/8-inch mortar joint and its nominal size becomes 4 by 2-2/3 by 8 inches, which is why it takes about 6.86 modular bricks to cover one square foot of wall.
Every brick has two sizes worth knowing. The actual (specified) size is the physical dimension of the fired unit. The nominal size is the actual size plus one mortar joint, rounded to fit the 4-inch building module that US construction is laid out on. Glen-Gery has manufactured brick to these standards since 1890 and makes more than 600 products, from the Modular size up to the Double Titan Plus (nominal 8 by 8 by 16 inches).
The largest unit manufactured by Glen-Gery is a Double Titan Plus, which is 7-5/8" thick and high by 15-5/8" (nominally 8x8x16).
The longest unit manufactured by Glen-Gery is a Roman Maximus size, which is more than 3 Modular brick long (23-5/8").
